John T. Baier, M.S.F.S., CLU ChFC CFP CLF
John T. Baier entered the insurance business while still attending Seton Hall University in 1970. In 1971 he graduated and continued to work as an agent out of the Monmouth, New Jersey office of New York Life. After serving military duty as an Artillery Officer in the Army, John re-entered his career in the insurance business and became an Assistant Manager. During this time, he hosted a weekly television show covering insurance and investments. He also taught CLU courses in investments, income tax and finance.
After several years as a national leader in second-line management, John was appointed General Manager of the Albany General Office, July 1, 1981. In his first four years in Albany, the office First Year Commissions were tripled; the profitability increased by 150%. In 1991, John won the President’s Trophy for the Northeast Zone by leading in Retention of Agents, Net Agent Growth, Net Expense Ratio and Persistency of Business. On May 1, 1995 he was appointed Managing Partner of the Bergen General Office. In 1996, he won the President’s Trophy for the highest percentage commission increase in the country, and the Chairman’s Trophy for the Northeast Zone. In 1997, he won the Vice Chairman’s Trophy for the largest increase in New Organization, the Executive Management Trophy for best retention of new agents and the Senior Vice President’s Trophy for net agent increase. In 1998, he repeated as winner of the Vice Chairman’s Trophy. In 1999, once again, John repeated as winner of the Vice Chairman’s Trophy. John became a lifetime member of the New York Life Partners Round Table in 2002 and was named the New Jersey Life Underwriter of the Year. He has promoted five managers out to their own agencies. With over $9.5 million in First Year Commissions in 2009 and close to 210 agents, the New Jersey G.O. is currently one of the biggest and fastest growing offices in the Country.
John received his CLU degree in 1974, his Masters of Science and Financial Services in 1979 and was among the first chartered Financial Consultants in 1982. In March 2005, John became a Certified Financial Planner™. He is past President of the Capital District General Agents and Managers and served as the National Publications Chairman for the American Society of CLU/ChFC.
He was Chairman of the MDRT/GAMA International Joint Mentoring Council, served on the Board of the GAMA Foundation, and on June 1, 2010 he became the President of GAMA International. In March of 2006, John was elected by his peers to Chair the Managing Partner’s Advisory Council for New York Life. John is married to Denise, they have three children: Jack, Suzanna and Anastasia.
From 1995, John has promoted five partners to run their own agencies. Other impressive gains during his tenture as managing partner include the number of recruiters (frontline managers) increasing from 2 to 11; the number of appointments growing from 15 to 78; the number of MDRT agents increasing from 6 to 68; and the total number of agents increasing from 48 to 210.
